Party girls and cupcakes cards, using peel off stickers

The humble peel off sticker doesn't always get a great press in the world of crafting. However, they can be a very handy addition to your crafting stash and a little can go a very long way.
Check out these beautiful designs by my talented friend Angie, a member of the Foil Play design team, for lots of inspiration on how to make some gorgeous cards and tags.
Angie has used very simple ingredients, including peel off stickers, gel pens, ribbon and a touch of bling.
I'm sure you'll agree that the results are stunning!
On some cards, such as the right hand side of the one above, you can see that Angie has used the 'negative' part of the peel off as well - i.e. the bit left behind on the sticker sheet when you peel the main design away.
Many stickers have been stuck onto card then Angie has decoupaged around the design and mounted them with 3D self adhesive foam, to add dimension to the finished projects.

Sympathy card using picture peel off

My friend made this sympathy card, after the death of his friend and work colleague, who was an HGV driver.

The silver picture peel off sticker has been placed on silver mirri card, decoupaged and mounted onto a blue mat with foam pads. A greetings peel off has been added to a matching mat and both mats have been fixed to silver pearl card using plain metallic brads. The silver card was then mounted onto an A5 card, made from an A4 sheet of silver moondust card, folded in two.

Easter card making supplies

With Easter rapidly approaching, I thought it would be handy to do a round up of what's available at Foil Play for making Easter cards. First of all, the cute selection of new Patchwork Kingdom Easter characters designed by Beth Huges, with co-ordinating background papers. The Easter hen is pictured above.
Also new, two foiled die cut sheets from Kanban containing a selection of Easter toppers and greetings, with co-ordinating daffodil and Easter egg background card sheets.
There is a selection of traditional 3D step by step decoupage sheets featuring cute bunnies and chicks, if you prefer religious images, there are plenty of those available too.
I have just stocked up again on Easter greetings peel offs with several designs available to choose from in gold, silver and yellow, and also on Mother's Day greetings peel offs.

Foil Play peel offs feature in Papercraft Essentials magazine

Check out issue 34 of Papercraft Essentials magazine for a feature (pages 68 - 70) using the peel offs pictured.

The article includes instructions for five gorgeous cards designed by Kim Fee, using swirly candle and bauble peel offs, which are available at Foil Play in gold, silver, white (gorgeous on vellum), black and copper.

Double sided peel off stickers

Here's something a little different! Double sided peel off stickers in a wide choice of designs, including greetings, butterflies, flowers, hearts, stars, borders and more.

These stickers are intended for use with foil, glitter, flock, caviar beads or coloured sand. Great for adding dimension and texture to your card craft projects.

The picture above shows a selection of the hearts stickers, to which I've applied pearl pink, hot pink and red foil, holographic pink ultra fine art glitter, red flock and red caviar beads.

To apply the stickers, first peel back the top covering layer, remove the sticker of your choice, and apply to your project. Remove the second covering film (you can use this to mask part of the design if you want to use more than one colour on an individual sticker motif) and press over foil, glitter, flock, sand or beads to decorate the sticker.

There is a slight 'lip' to the face of the stickers where they have been cut on the sheet - when I tried them out, I found that I got better results by applying the face of the sticker to the project, then foiling or glittering the reverse of the sticker.

More new peel off designs

I have added lots of new peel off sticker designs to the site this weekend, including oriental, religious, embroidery, Christmas greetings and Christmas designs.

Many of the new sticker sheets are filled, rather than outline peel offs. You can of course apply these directly to your project. Alternatively, you can apply them to decorative background paper or card, then decoupage around the sticker and mount on your project, for added dimension and decorative effect.

Crafting with peel off stickers - a few hints and tips

Peel off stickers are a staple item for the crafter, and very versatile. Use them in many ways, from popping on a quick greeting or embellishment, or really go to town to produce more special effects.

Basic 'how to' instructions

To apply peel off stickers, bend the sheet and gently pull up part of the edge of the sticker (on delicate designs it may be necessary to loosen more edges).

Peel the entire sticker off the sheet and allow it to relax in the air, and regain its shape. Use tweezers, or a 'pokey tool' to hold the sticker if you prefer. Gently place the sticker onto your project (so that you can reposition if necessary). When you are happy with the placement, press down to adhere it.

If you are working with a greetings sticker, or individual letters, it can be a little tricky to get the wording straight. One way to do this is to use a post-it note as a straight edge against which you can align the message, then remove the post-it note when you are done.

If you are working with a very large peel off design, it can be sometimes be difficult to get it to lay it flat on your project, without getting any lumps or crinkles in the design. A tip here is to lay the peel off on your work surface, adhesive facing upwards, then lay your card or paper over the peel off and adhere it in that way.

How to get more out of your peel off stickers

Here are just a few ideas for using peel off stickers:

- colour in the sticker using a variety of materials - watercolour or gel pens, paints, chalks etc;

- use the sticker as a stencil - first remove some of the stickiness, by sticking to your clothes a couple of times, then place on your project and chalk over, then lift the sticker away (and repeat the process if you wish to make a background design, for example);

- apply the sticker to adhesive film (or use a glue pen), and colour it in using ultra fine glitter, rub on foil or coloured sand;

- apply the sticker to your choice of decorative background, then cut around it before applying to your project, either flat or using foam pads or silicone adhesive to achieve a 3D effect - either will emphasise the design very effectively. Transparent peel offs suit this technique particularly well. For background, you could use plain, decorative or holographic paper or card. Gold peel offs on a gold background or silver peel offs on silver look great too;

- bored with the basic colours? - change the colour of your stickers (while still on the backing sheet) using overhead projector or special peel off colouring pens;

- use the stickers as an outline for glass painting projects;

- use the 'negative' left behind after using a peel off sticker. To do this, you will need to cover the negative design with overlapping strips of Scotch magic tape, or peel off transfer sheets. Press down very firmly, then lift off the design. Place the tape / transfer sheet over where you wish to apply the negative image, then rub over very firmly (e.g. with the back of a spoon) and the design will transfer. You will need to apply a lot of pressure to achieve this successfully!

- another way to use the 'negative' if you have the same design of sticker in different colours, is to use the 'negative' from one or more different colours to fill in a design, use tweezers or a pokey tool to get the pieces in position.
